What Are Personality Types?
Personality types are a way of describing consistent patterns in how people think, feel and behave. The best-known system is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs from Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. It sorts people into 16 types using four pairs of preferences.
Extraversion (E) vs Introversion (I)
Do you recharge by spending time with others and the outside world, or through quiet time in your own inner world?
Sensing (S) vs Intuition (N)
Do you focus on concrete facts and present details, or on patterns, meanings and future possibilities?
Thinking (T) vs Feeling (F)
Do you make decisions mainly with objective logic, or by weighing values and the impact on people?
Judging (J) vs Perceiving (P)
Do you prefer structure, plans and closure, or flexibility, spontaneity and keeping options open?
No type is better than another. Knowing your type can help you understand your natural strengths, communicate better with people who think differently, and choose work and relationships that suit you. Start with the free personality test, then read your type profile.
Personality Type FAQs
What are the 16 personality types?
The 16 personality types come from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which is based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. Each type is a four-letter code that combines one preference from each of four pairs: Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I), Sensing (S) or Intuition (N), Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and Judging (J) or Perceiving (P).
Which is the rarest personality type?
INFJ is usually cited as the rarest of the 16 types, followed by ENTJ and INTJ. The most common types tend to be ISFJ, ESFJ and ISTJ, although exact percentages vary between studies and populations.
How can I find out my personality type?
Take our free personality test. It asks a short set of questions about how you focus your energy, take in information, make decisions and organise your life, then shows which four-letter type fits you best. You can then read your full type profile and compare it with other types.
Can your personality type change?
Your core preferences tend to stay fairly stable over your life, but how strongly you express them can shift with age, experience and circumstances. Many people find they test as a neighbouring type at different times, which is why our comparison guides explain the differences between similar types.
Which personality types are most compatible?
There is no single perfect match. Types that share an intuitive or sensing preference often communicate easily, while opposite types can complement each other’s strengths. Our personality comparisons look at how each pair gets along in friendships, work and relationships.
